This technique has its roots in pre-Roman times.

Gold leaf is adhered directly to the back of glass with size. A variety of tools is then used to scratch away the gold, working the design in reverse. Reverse painting may also be applied to the glass. Finally, the whole of the back is painted over, to provide the striking contrast evident in these pieces.
