These derive from mediaeval illuminated manuscripts, so called because of their brilliant decorations, with jewel-like colours and lavish use of gold.

Like with panel paintings, paints are mixed from powdered pigment, but the medium this time is glair (derived from egg white), rather than the yolk medium used for panels.

Lynne’s illuminations are mostly on paper, but she has done some notable pieces on vellum.
